SSAB Borlänge chooses Boards on Fire for digital daily management

With many years of experience in daily management, SSAB Borlänge is now taking the next step. This autumn, the site will begin implementing Boards on Fire as a shared digital platform for daily management and continuous improvement in production. The aims include greater transparency, better follow-up and less manual administration.

Daily management has been an established part of the way SSAB Borlänge works since 2014. Over time, different parts of the organisation have developed their own solutions using tools such as whiteboards, Excel and Teams. These have worked locally, but have also made it harder to build a shared view of operations and track information, deviations and improvements across the organisation.

To find a more unified way of working, SSAB Borlänge launched a cross-functional feasibility study involving representatives from production, IT, purchasing and business development. Five different systems were evaluated, and the group also considered developing an in-house solution. In spring 2025, pilots were carried out with the two systems considered most promising. In the end Boards on Fire was selected.

From separate solutions to a shared platform

Boards on Fire gives SSAB Borlänge a connected system in which information can be visualised and shared across different parts and levels of the organisation. Deviations and improvements can be recorded, responsibilities assigned and actions followed up in a structured way.

“This will be a robust, central system where everyone works with the same quality-assured data. We will reduce manual work, the risk of errors and reliance on individual people, while improving our ability to follow up and present the right data across the entire site,” says Magnus Bogren, IT Service Manager at SSAB Borlänge.

Strong interest across the organisation

This autumn, Boards on Fire will be rolled out in the Varmvals och Format department. The Kallvalsverk will follow. The goal is for all production operations in Borlänge to use the platform, giving every employee a clearer view of how their own area contributes to the bigger picture.

“There is tremendous interest among our operators and the managers working closest to the production line. Many want better ways to aggregate data so they can actually keep track of what is happening. They will also no longer need to search for information in different files or on different boards,” says Björn Palmebrandt, Section Manager for Valsning in Varmvalsverket.

Digitalisation that strengthens an established way of working

For SSAB Borlänge, this initiative is about giving an established way of working better digital support, rather than replacing daily management with an IT system.

“A system is only as good as the way people work with it, so it is important to get everyone on board. But we have a major advantage in having held daily management meetings for many years. This will be a tool that strengthens the work already being done,” says Thomas Israels, Section Manager for Business Development at SSAB Borlänge.

This aligns well with Boards on Fire’s view of digital daily management: technology should make it easier to work in a structured way, get the right information to the right people and turn deviations and decisions into concrete actions.

“SSAB Borlänge already has a strong foundation in its established approach to daily management. That makes it particularly exciting to provide digital support that can connect information, follow-up and continuous improvement across production. We really look forward to following their continued journey,” says Liam Andersson, Key Account Manager at Boards on Fire.

The next step for daily management

As part of the implementation, SSAB Borlänge will also review which key performance indicators should be visualised and monitored. This creates an opportunity to both digitalise existing ways of working and develop them further.

As Thomas Israels puts it:

“We now have the chance to challenge ourselves and think differently, rather than simply doing what we have always done. That way, we can make daily management here in Borlänge even better in the future.”
