Väderstad has taken its production to the next level by implementing a takt flow! This smart method divides the assembly process into nine clear stations, each with a fixed cycle time of two hours and 20 minutes. This means that two machines are produced consecutively, followed by a break cycle that allows operators time to prepare for the next batch. With this structure, Väderstad can produce up to 20 machines each week! Thanks to takt flow, they have streamlined production and made it more efficient, while also making it easier to keep track of all parts of the process.
Väderstad, one of the world’s leading companies in tillage, seeding, and precision planting, has streamlined its assembly process by introducing a takt-based flow. This approach is meticulously structured and visualized using Boards on Fire.
One of the greatest advantages of Boards on Fire, according to Johan Elmenius, who is responsible for its implementation at Väderstad, is its simplicity and user-friendliness.
— The system is extremely easy to set up and get started with, and it doesn’t require advanced IT infrastructure, says Johan. Boards on Fire can be controlled through a web browser on a standard TV screen, making it easy for operators to follow and manage production, even without a technical background.
— We were able to quickly start using the system to control production, he adds.
To ensure that every step in production stays on track, Väderstad has implemented Boards on Fire. The system monitors the progress at each station and displays clearly on large takt boards whether production is following the set takt time or if deviations occur. The boards, which are connected to Väderstad’s business system, synchronize production data and material handling in real-time, making the entire process transparent and easy to follow.
Väderstad uses a takt window, which means that each takt cycle counts down with a 17 percent buffer, offering flexibility to handle potential delays. This extra buffer ensures that all parts of production maintain the right pace.
Johan also emphasizes how Boards on Fire has brought greater clarity to the production process.
— It has provided us with extreme clarity. Everyone in the organization now shares the same understanding of the production flow, making it easy to identify and address deviations, he explains.
The system has also improved collaboration between different departments, particularly in material supply, which is now better synchronized with production. The takt clocks create a clear work rhythm and standardize work hours throughout the entire hall, reducing the risk of delays and improving efficiency.
The takt boards have become a central part of Väderstad’s daily production. The nine stations are closely monitored, and the boards clearly show whether the takt time is being met or if any actions are needed. Through these boards, operators can see when and how materials need to be replenished and follow up on any deviations in real-time. This allows issues to be addressed quickly, ensuring smooth production without significant disruptions.
When a disruption occurs, such as a station not keeping up with the takt time, this is immediately displayed on the takt board. Operators have a clear procedure to escalate the issue, and the system pinpoints exactly where the problem occurred. This allows extra resources to be quickly allocated to the station if necessary. If the disruption is related to material supply, this is also shown on the board, and immediate corrective actions are taken. Thanks to this system, Väderstad can quickly return to normal production levels.
In summary, by implementing takt time, Väderstad has achieved a higher level of clarity, efficiency, and control over its production. The system has made it easier to manage disruptions and ensured that all parts of the production run according to plan. Johan Elmenius sees great potential for the system and believes it can be further developed to optimize production even more.
— It’s a system that is both powerful and easy to use, and I believe that more companies could benefit from this type of solution to improve their processes, Johan concludes.
