Svets & Smide optimizes its processes with Boards on Fire

Svets & Smide in Karlskrona offers both new manufacturing and quick service assignments for most things related to metal. As the business has grown, they have gradually digitalized their way of working with the help of Boards on Fire, which has resulted in better visibility of processes and made communication smoother across multiple levels.

Keeping track of key metrics and deviations is crucial for effective daily management. For Svets & Smide, digitalizing this process became a natural step toward streamlining operations and reducing duplicate work.

- In the beginning, we managed our daily operations using a whiteboard, but we quickly realized it created double work since the same numbers had to be updated in multiple places. After attending a forum organized by Techtank, I came across Boards on Fire — a tool that allows us to update information in one place and escalate it across several levels, says Ulf Hagström, CEO at Svets & Smide.

A significant transformation journey

Svets & Smide is a well-established local player in metalworking and repair services, with expertise in materials such as black steel and aluminum. The company offers tailored solutions, handling everything from minor repairs to large-scale constructions. Whether it's fixing a boat propeller or building durable steel structures, they deliver high-quality services adapted to each customer’s needs.

In recent years, the company has actively worked with daily management through physical meetings using whiteboards. With the digitalization via Boards on Fire, they have now taken a significant step forward and managed to streamline several parts of the business.

- We’re seeing clear results in the form of faster communication and a more efficient workflow, says Ulf.

Faster and clearer communication

One of the biggest advantages of Boards on Fire is that new information can quickly reach the entire organization in real-time, facilitating both information and workflow.

- With Boards on Fire, we can update key metrics in one place, and they are then displayed on screens throughout the company. All departments have access to the same up-to-date data, which has streamlined our work and increased transparency, explains Ulf.

At Svets & Smide, daily management is carried out on three levels. At 7 a.m., each production leader gathers their team to go through incidents, quality deviations, delivery deviations, and internal discrepancies. Next, the management team holds a meeting following the same structure, where the data is analyzed. Finally, the information reaches me, giving me a comprehensive view of the business's status on that particular day," he explains.

Curious staff with a strong interest

- When we digitalized our daily management, it was very well received. We have a highly curious team that is interested in digitalization and enjoys working with new technology. Most importantly, they appreciate receiving information continuously. We’ve been able to be very clear about our expectations, and our employees have been able to clarify their expectations as well, says Ulf Hagström.

Ulf also highlights how the ongoing information sharing contributes to increased employee engagement.

- It creates a drive within the team to, for example, spot deviations. Additionally, it’s easy to report, which means more people actually do it, he says.

How has the communication and collaboration with Boards on Fire been?

- When we started with Boards on Fire, the support team was highly engaged in ensuring a smooth start. They showed great interest in our journey. Thanks to the efficient communication, the implementation of Boards on Fire went very smoothly for us, says Ulf.
